Sphinx Unearthed in Aswan: A Fascinating Discovery by Egyptian Archaeological Mission

An exciting discovery has been made by an Egyptian archaeological mission in Aswan. While conducting excavation work at the Kom Ombo temple with the aim of reducing the ground water level, a sandstone statue of a Sphinx was unexpectedly unearthed.

The general secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, revealed that the statue is believed to date back to the Ptolemaic era. This conclusion was drawn as the statue was found in the south-eastern side of the Kom Ombo temple, the very location where two sandstone reliefs of King Ptolemy V were recently discovered just two months ago.

Abdel Moneim Saeed, the general director of the Aswan and Nubia antiquities council, announced that further archaeological studies will be carried out on the Sphinx to unveil more details about its history and the monarch to whom it is linked. The previous reliefs of King Ptolemy V, adorned with hieroglyphic and demotic writings, were meticulously engraved in sandstone. Upon their uncovering, these reliefs were carefully transferred to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat for preservation and eventual display within the museum.
