The 1970 Challenger marked Dodge’s late yet thrilling entry into the muscle car arena, spurred by the success of the Ford Mustang’s debut in 1964, appealing particularly to younger demographics.

Priced slightly higher than its Plymouth Barracuda counterpart, which had already established its presence akin to the Mustang, the Challenger boasted a 110-inch wheelbase, two inches longer than the ‘Cuda, and a broader overall stance, positioning it as a competitor to the more upscale Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird.

Despite its larger dimensions, the Challenger exuded a commanding presence with its aggressive design featuring a lengthy hood, compact decklid, and a sleek, low profile. Among the over 84,000 units sold in its inaugural year, only 19,938 were the coveted R/T model.

The R/T line, powered by the robust 440 CI Magnum V-8 engine delivering 375 HP, remained a cornerstone throughout its production from 1967 to 1971. Retaining its signature dual-snorkel black air cleaner, exhaust manifolds, 26-inch radiator, and factory A/C compressor, the engine was paired with an A727 Torqueflite transmission and a D53 3.23 final axle ratio, ensuring an exhilarating driving experience.
