In the late 1960s, the Ford Mustang, like many muscle cars of its time, boasted a vibrant array of colors. The 1969 lineup, in particular, featured eye-catching shades such as Calypso Coral, Gulfstream Aqua, Lime Gold, and Grabber Blue.
During this period, Ford displayed a penchant for blue hues, offering the Mustang in no less than eight variations. These included Silver Jade, Aztec Aqua, Gulfstream Aqua, Grabber Blue, Winter Blue, Acapulco Blue, Beatnik Blue, and Sierra Blue.
Surprisingly, the Mustang sported pink as early as 1965, with Hot Pink being a factory color even in 1969. This unconventional choice was complemented by the presence of a light purple option known as Lilac Frost.
Despite a diverse palette of 38 hues, it couldn’t satisfy every Mustang enthusiast. Some customers opted for special colors, leading to unique specimens like a Mach 1 Cobra Jet painted in a striking purple.
The rarity of this purple Mach 1 is not mere speculation. Documented by YouTube’s “DezzysSpeedShop,” the Mustang underwent a meticulous restoration, returning it to factory specifications. The unique purple hue is confirmed by the Marty Report, which notes it as a “Special Paint” with the code “purple, Ford # WT9106 per paint chip.”
This Mach 1 is part of an exclusive club, being one of 1,926 Mustangs ordered with special paint in 1969. Moreover, it stands out among the 5,853 units equipped with the powerful 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet Ram Air V8 engine and a four-speed manual transmission.
Delving into the specifics, this Mustang is one of just 94 featuring a special-order color and a black-out hood combo. The exclusivity continues with only 15 having white knit vinyl bucket seats, six with deluxe seat belts, four with tinted glass, and a rare two with both tinted glass and an AM radio.
Beyond its unique appearance, this Mach 1 boasts formidable performance. Fitted with the 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet engine, it delivers 335 horsepower and 440 pound-feet (597 Nm) of torque, making it one of the most potent Mustangs of its time.
