Volkswagen, a key automaker of the 20th century, transformed from building the German “people’s car” into a global best-seller with a dedicated following. Conceived by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, Volkswagen earned customer loyalty through its practical, reliable, adaptable, and affordable products.
The Volkswagen Type 2, akin to the iconic Beetle sedan, gained its own cult status and enjoyed a longer production run. Conceived in the late 1940s by Dutch Volkswagen agent Ben Pon, the Type 2 was a van based on the Beetle’s platform.
Released as the Volkswagen Type 2 in 1950, it quickly expanded into a wide range of models for diverse commercial and domestic purposes. The original version retained the Beetle’s rear-mounted 1,200cc air-cooled engine and four-speed gearbox, suitably adapted for the van’s increased weight. With engine upgrades and improved handling and comfort over time, the design saw its first major revision in 1968, having sold nearly two million units worldwide.
