The introduction of the Plus-Four-Plus at the 1964 London International Auto Show was met with silence from Morgan’s loyal fans, but it would prove pivotal for the company’s survival and is now a sought-after rarity. This new Morgan, a departure from the traditional Plus-Four roadster, disappointed enthusiasts who considered the roadster’s primitive seats and suspension the essence of a British sports car.
Company president Peter Morgan aimed to modernize the company his grandfather founded. The Plus-Four-Plus used the standard Morgan chassis but featured a fiberglass coupe body with a distinctive “bubble” top crafted by E.B. (Staffs) Ltd. It had proper seats, instruments, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and luggage space.
However, orders waned, forcing the factory to cancel plans for 50 units. Yet, this led to a surge in demand for the traditional Plus-Four roadster, providing the needed cash to ensure the company’s survival. Only 26 coupes were made over three years, many finding homes with U.S. and Canadian enthusiasts.
